Now that everyone is home from The Quarter Horse Congress, Color Breed Congress, and all of the World Shows, it is time to reflect on your year and start planning for next year’s journey. For some youth, this means diving head first into your collegiate adventure. This winter, while you are snowed in or hibernating from the cold, be sure to dedicate some time to getting your scholarship applications organized. Whether or not you plan on horses being a part of your college plans, NSBA has some quick tips for you on applying for scholarships.  Also, be sure to keep your eyes open for the NSBA Foundation Youth Scholarship, applications will be accepted from December 1 through February 1, 2019.

1)    Always Apply - So many scholarships go un-awarded simply because no one applied for them. Even when you do not think you will receive it, apply anyway, worst-case scenario it is practice for your next scholarship!

2)    Do Your Homework – Many organizations offer scholarships to their members, from your state, regional, and national associations to local church groups and school boards. Spend some time on Google, and come up with a list of every scholarship you could be qualified for.

3)    Check the Checklist – Many scholarships will provide you with a checklist of qualifications and requirements for your submission. You never want to be the person who gets eliminated because they forgot to include a cover letter, or left one question blank.

4)    First Impressions Matter – If your application is to be submitted via mail, or requires a hard copy, use a folder, binder or page protectors to make sure your submission is in tip-top shape when it reaches its destination. Make sure your materials are organized – submitting them in the order they are listed on the checklist is always a plus! For electronic submissions, always save your documents as a pdf before hitting send.

5)    Be Genuine – Scholarships are designed to reward you for your excellence, and help you continue to succeed. Of course you need to keep all responses professional (use more than just spellcheck to edit), but it is incredibly important to let your personality shine through. As tempting as it can be, avoid using the same generic, formula answer for every scholarship application. Your essays and short answer responses should be honest, and give real insight into why you are the best possible recipient for that scholarship.
