What is the Stallion Incentive Fund Licensing program?

NSBA introduced the Stallion Incentive Fund (SIF) Licensing program beginning in 2008 for horses of all ages. All licensed horses are eligible to earn incentive fund points based on Dual Approved and Special Event shows earning cash value. The purse base on Stallion Incentive Fund sold breedings for the current year and a portion of sanction fees collected. All NSBA points earned in Dual Approved and Special Event Open and Amateur classes will be paid out excluding green and novice classes. In 2016, NSBA paid out $31.26 per point.

The stallion nominator receives 10% of the earnings of offspring, the horse nominator earns 10% and the owner of the horse earns 80% of the License payout.

How do I know if my horse is eligible to be licensed?

To be licensed, a horse must be sired by a stallion that sold a breeding in the NSBA Stallion Incentive Fund the year the horse was foaled. Eligible stallions are listed on the NSBA website, www.nsba.com, under Licensing.

Does my horse need to be licensed to show in NSBA classes?

No. To Show in NSBA classes both the owner and exhibitor are required to be NSBA members. The horse does not need to be licensed. The license provides the eligibility to earn money for points earned in NSBA Dual Approved and Special Events classes.

If I do not license my weanling, can I still license it later?

Weanlings sired by sold stallions can be licensed by December 15, 2017 for $100. After that horses sired by eligible stallions may be licensed for a onetime fee of $200 until December 31, 2017. A new fee structure will be in place beginning January 1, 2018.

Certificate of Eligibility

Once the nomination form has been received and validated and a copy of the breed registration papers have been forwarded to the NSBA office, a Certificate of Eligibility is mailed to the foal owner. The Certificate must be current when the horse is shown. Any changes in information will need to be forwarded to the NSBA office, along with a transfer form. The fee for changes including those listed below is $35. Please note that a copy of the horse's registration papers must accompany the transfer form.

  • Change in ownership
  • Change in the name of horse
  • Loss of original certificate

Membership Form

All memberships expire December 31st. Memberships taken after October 1st will expire the following year. Please allow 30 days for processing. U.S. Funds, please. One form per membership - Submit a separate application.


Please not that Owner's name(s) on membership must read exactly as it appears on horses's registration papers.
