The Madness AQHA and NSBA show is currently underway at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio, and some of the first NSBA futurity champions have been named.

On Tuesday, six horses vied for the $1,000 Added Open Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle but it was a horse who showed for just the second time who took the top spot. Carly Veldman Parks guided Up N The Ante to the win for Lisa and William Wilkes, earning the $$624.50 first place paycheck. There was a two-way tie for second between Super Freek, shown by Jamie English for Kelly Smith, and Hot Dig It, shown by Farley McLendon for Rebecca Edward. Each earned $382.25.

“We call him Jose’ and Lisa and Bill Wilkes brought him to us as a two year old last year,” Carly explained. “He is really bred to be a Western Pleasure horse – he’s by No Doubt Im Lazy and out of Lisa’s good mare who produced VS Code Me Lucky. When we started him, he just kept getting bigger, so we took our time with him. Earlier this year, I just started posting on him, and we decided that maybe he could be a Hunter Under Saddle horse.”

Carly and Lisa were pleased with his progress. “His first horse show was just last weekend,” Carly said. “I think he’s found his calling. He’s so easy, and he has to be for me to show him as a futurity horse – I coach All Around clients all day and just pull him out of the stall and show him. He has no motor.

“We’ll be showing him in the Three Year Old and Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle classes this year, and Lisa will start showing him in Select Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. We’re looking forward to showing him at the Premier, possibly the Back To Berrien show and the Big A, and just go on with him.”

Over the weekend, two NSBA added money classes here held. In the $2,500 Limited Rider Open Western Pleasure, Shannon Curl-Holbin showed Dark Ladie for owner Haley Purkapile to win $916.80 in a first place finish. (Photo courtesy of Shannon Curl-Holbin). Reserve champions were Martini Time, shown by Anthony Montes for Brett and Heather Capliner, earning $630.30. Taking third was Foxy Cleopatra, shown by Elizabeth Yoder for Robert Fowler, winning $544.35.
