When the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta gathered for their Canadian National Quarter Horse Show August 20-24, 2025, they added a special twist to the show schedule—a fundraiser for the NSBA Crisis Fund.
“I had wanted to plan a fundraiser for the NSBA Crisis Fund for years now,” shared Logan Bitz, husband of Canadian professional horse trainer Deserie Bitz. “Back in December of 2018 my wife had a bad horse accident and was off from riding for a long time. Among all the amazing people who donated time and money to help us, the NSBA Crisis Fund contributed by donating funds to help our family.”
Logan and the show committee decided to bring that spirit of giving full circle by hosting a fun, interactive event during their show.
Frisbees for a Cause
The fundraiser featured a frisbee toss where each donation to the Crisis Fund earned the participant a frisbee and all 300 were handed out. Participants aimed their frisbees toward a wheelbarrow in the center of the arena—closest landing frisbees won!
“We were looking to plan a fun activity that brought people together while supporting a cause that matters to us,” Logan explained.
Prizes made the event even more exciting:
• First place: $500 gift card to Shorty’s Caboy Hattery
• Second place: $250 gift card to Brinks Hattery

Riata Schiestel won first place, receiving a $500 gift to Shorty’s Caboy Hattery.

Riata Schiestel won second place, receiving a $250 gift to Brink's Hattery.
Both winners — youth exhibitors Riata Schiestel and Briella Schroeder — proudly represented the next generation of horsemen giving back to the community.
Supporting the NSBA Crisis Fund
The NSBA Crisis Fund provides financial assistance to horsemen and their families in times of unforeseen hardship such as accidents, illness or natural disasters. The contributions raised in Red Deer, Alberta will help ensure that when another member of the equine community faces a crisis, the NSBA Foundation can be there to help.
